Concrete Siberia

Finally received my copy of Concrete Siberia by Zupagrafika after 3 months due to covid19, which severely impacted the international movement of people and goods. Photographs were taken by Russian photographer Alexander Veryovkin. Concrete Siberia provides a rare glimpse into the fascinating modernist structures that populate the vast Russian territory. Gorgeous photographs of post-war modern architecture spread across cities of Novosibirsk, Omsk, Krasnoyarsk, Norilsk, Irkutsk, and Yakutsk and the daily lives of their inhabitants. The only complaint is there is a dent on the spine of the book *cry.

It is divided into six chapters and what is so striking is the human intervention which gives a perfect sense of scale and the smallness of the residents against a mighty brutal backdrop

This book is a must-have for fans of post-war soviet modernist architecture.

I traveled to Russia Far East in 2015 and I must say Russia is a fascinating place to be (but not forgetting the challenges language barriers poses). And as you know Russia is a big country with 11 different time zone across. Yes, u heard it right, 11 different time zone in a country and I only manage to cover places like Vladivostok, Irkutsk, Chita, Lake Baikal etc.

Would love to visit again in future.
